This tradition – one part Arthurian legend, one part Sleeping Beauty – has been placed on a pedestal and used to evaluate the worthiness of every Zelda game since its inception, if not by its creators then by its devoted fans. It has both idolized and rebelled against the all-important formula that Zelda was built on: a hero named Link, a princess named Zelda, a villain named Ganon, and their eternal dance around the fate of the kingdom Hyrule. It has struggled to remain fresh, to remain relevant. Yet The Legend of Zelda has struggled against itself for most of the franchise’s lifetime. Still, misinformed as she may be, even my mother has some idea of what Zelda means, which is quite a testament to its place in our cultural map. Indeed, Zelda is now a household name – perhaps to the dismay of many a devoted fan, who will point out that the hero’s name is Link, not Zelda. ![]() ![]() ![]() Since then, it has fought through the decades to maintain its iconic and beloved place in the gaming world. The Legend of Zelda first invited gamers into its fantastical world almost thirty years ago.
